Critically, Amazon stores an estimated 200 billion tons of carbon in its soils and plants. Yet, enormous swaths of forest are being removed for human use, putting it on the verge of collapse.
Many of these regions, including parts of the Amazon, are home to some of the world’s most diverse wildlife.
Still, they are also under significant threat from developers seeking to convert the land to unsustainable human uses such as agriculture or mining.
There is an urgent need to protect indigenous peoples’ rights to lands, territories, and resources to protect their well-being and assist them in their internationally significant efforts to combat climate change and avoid biodiversity loss.
Txai Surui is one of six teenage climate activists suing the Brazilian government for altering its carbon emission pledges and thereby breaching the Paris Climate Agreement, which Brazil joined.

Txai Surui is an indigenous youth activist from the Amazonian town of Rondonia.
She started a young people’s organization and is one of six young climate activists suing the Brazilian government for changing its 2005 carbon baseline to fulfill the Paris Climate Agreement’s carbon reduction objectives.

Where Is Txai Surui From?
Txai Surui comes from the Amazonian town of Rondonia. She is Neidinha’s daughter, and, like her mother, she is an inspiring environmentalist.
She studied law and now works with the Kanindé legal team to preserve the rights and land of indigenous tribes.
Rondônia is one of Brazil’s 26 states, located in the country’s northern division. To the west, there is a brief border with Acre, to the north, Amazonas, to the east, Mato Grosso, and the south and southwest, Bolivia.
