He began his career at Sports Illustrated after graduating and eventually moved on to the United States Information Agency.
He began writing historical nonfiction after getting a job at American Heritage, and The Johnstown Flood, his debut piece, was published in 1968.
Presidential biographies of Harry Truman in 1992 and John Adams in 2001, two of McCullough’s most well-known books, not only received Pulitzer Prizes but also were adapted into TV miniseries.
His talent for relating stories made him a skilled narrator of documentaries such as Ken Burns’ Civil War.
