David is the first African American to hold the position of New York Governor and the second legally blind governor of any state after Bob C. Riley. David has also served as the 55th Governor of New York where he succeeded Eliot Spitzer and served out the final three years, from March 2008 to the end of 2010, of Spitzer’s term.

Upon his graduation from law school, David worked in the District Attorney’s office of Queens County, New York, and on the staff of Manhattan Borough President David Dinkins. David was elected to the New York State Senate in 1985. In 2003, he was given the position of Senate Minority Leader.
