Dr. Ronald Sherman, MD – Santa Ana, CA

Ronald Sherman earned degrees in Entomology (BS - UC Riverside) and Medicine (MD - UCLA), before going on to study Tropical Medicine at the University of London (MSc). Long interested in maggot therapy, he initiated the first clinical trials of maggot therapy for wound healing during his Infectious Diseases fellowship, 1989-1991.

Dr. Sherman continued his studies while on staff at the VA Medical Center, Long Beach, CA (Infectious Diseases/Geriatrics). Subsequently, he joined the faculty at UC Irvine to study maggot biochemistry. All the while, he continued to produce medicinal maggots for clinicians throughout the western hemisphere who wanted to share in the benefits of maggot therapy. As a founding member of the BioTherapeutics, Education and Research (BTER) Foundation, Dr. Sherman developed biotherapy educational programs for therapists, patients, and the community.

After the FDA began regulating his Medical Maggots, Dr. Sherman’s laboratory had to separate from the University (2005). Dr. Sherman continues to teach, do research, and produce medicinal maggots. But in order to minimize conflicts of interest, he earns his living in an unrelated field: working 1 or 2 days per week providing medical care for uninsured HIV/AIDS patients at the county’s health department.
