George Verwer Obituary, The trailblazing evangelist who reached the world for Christ,

The founder of Operation Mobilisation, George Verwer, has passed away at the age of 84. He died surrounded by his family after a prolonged illness at his home near London.

George Verwer directed one of the world’s top mission charities for over four decades, and he was known as “the most outstanding North American missionary statesman of the last 60 years”.

George Verwer’s mission work

George Verwer was a committed missionary who dedicated his life to the mission work. He made a commitment to Christ at a Billy Graham rally in New York City when he was only 17 years old.

He sold everything he could to give the money to world missions, and he even took a job waiting on tables to be able to give more. Throughout his life, he handed out over a million free books and remained committed to evangelism, even in his old age.

George Verwer’s legacy

George Verwer’s legacy lives on even after his death. He managed special projects, spoke at church events with characteristic vigour, and wrote over a dozen books in the twenty years since he stepped down from leading Operation Mobilisation (OM).

He was an advocate for grace and “messiology,” a term he used to describe how God works through people despite their mistakes. He was known for his authenticity, passion for reaching the lost, humility, and transparency when sharing about his struggles. Church leaders across the world have paid tribute to him.

George Verwer was a spiritual giant, as some people called him, but he never shied away from admitting his own imperfections and honouring God.

He believed in grace and remained committed to God’s mission throughout his life. He is survived by his wife, Drena, their three children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who have asked for privacy at this time.
