How did Ian steal the car?

On December 6, 2023, around 4:30 p.m., Kris Cramer, the senator’s wife, took their son Ian Cramer to a Bismarck emergency room due to his mental health crisis. Things took a distressing turn when Ian, the son, took control of the car and crashed through the hospital’s ambulance bay doors. This led to the car being reported as stolen—a black 2017 Chevrolet SUV.

Authorities tracked Ian using his mother’s phone left in the car. They found him in Hazen, about 70 miles away, thanks to his sister’s alertness. Ian then led the police on a high-speed chase, covering about five miles.

The pursuit ended when Ian crashed into an empty sheriff’s patrol car parked on the side of the highway, just over an hour after escaping the hospital.

Sadly, Officer Paul Martin, who was behind the patrol car during the crash, lost his life as the impact pushed the patrol car into him. Officer Martin was preparing to use a tire deflation device to stop Ian’s fleeing vehicle, as per the Highway Patrol.

Kevin Says Ian is Mentally Upset

Following the tragic loss of Officer Paul Martin, Senator Kevin Cramer shared a heartfelt statement shedding light on Ian’s hospital visit. Senator Cramer disclosed that Ian struggles with severe mental disorders, dealing with intense paranoia and hallucinations.

On December 6, Ian insisted on visiting his late brother Ike, who passed away in 2018. Accompanied by his mother Kris, he was taken to the hospital. There, he escaped, took a car, and set off a series of events that led to the tragic outcome. Sheriff Terry Ternes of Mercer County also expressed deep emotions, describing Paul Martin as a beloved brother.

Ian Cramer was first taken to a Hazen, N.D., hospital before being jailed in neighboring McLean County, as per police documents. As of December 7, 2023, he remained in custody without a listed lawyer.

In addition to manslaughter, Cramer faces other serious charges, including resisting arrest, fleeing the police, and reckless endangerment. The Bismarck police are collaborating with the state’s attorney in Burleigh County to press charges against Mr. Cramer for crimes committed in their area.
