Durst was the son of real estate billionaire Seymour Durst and Bernice Herstein. He grew up with his siblings Douglas, Tommy, and Wendy Durst.

Durst’s paternal grandfather, Joseph Durst, was a tailor when he immigrated from Austria-Hungary in 1902.

Moreover, he went on to become a renowned real-estate manager and developer, forming the Durst Organization in 1927.

When Robert was seven years old, his mother killed herself by jumping from the family’s Scarsdale home’s roof. Durst subsequently said that, just before she died, his father led him to a window where he could see her standing on the roof.
