Godard’s loose, almost slipshod filmmaking approach was foreshadowed in a series of shorts beginning with 1957’s Charlotte and Véronique or All the Boys Are Named Patrick.

Godard wanted to exploit a concept that had been developed by Truffaut but scrapped about a petty criminal and his girlfriend, so he approached Truffaut for permission to do so.

Meanwhile, Truffaut had a smashing success with his own movie, The 400 Blows, and Godard was able to leverage this to get his own film off the ground.

After being shot in the streets of Paris in 1959 with minimal artificial lighting and a script written on a daily basis, Godard’s Breathless became a genuine cultural phenomenon upon its release, launching the career of Jean-Paul Belmondo and earning him the best director award at the Berlin Film Festival.

Godard thereafter produced several landmark pictures at a breakneck pace throughout the 1960s.

Godard’s next film, Le Petit Soldat, suggested the French government condoned torture and was banned until 1963; however, it was on the set of this film that he met his future wife, Anna Karina, and where he first said his now-famous aphorism, “Cinema is truth at 24 frames a second.” Other notable works include the self-referential homage to the Hollywood musical A Woman Is a Woman, which starred Karina Anna.

In 1965, Godard and Karina divorced, and their final film together, Made in USA, an homage to American pulp fiction, faced copyright issues in the United States.

Godard’s filmmaking at the time reflected his identification with the revolutionary politics of the time; he helped shut down the Cannes film festival in 1968 in solidarity with the student riots in Paris; he worked with young Marxist student Jean-Pierre Gorin on Tout Va Bien, a study of a strike in a sausage factory starring Jane Foy; and so on.
