John Whorton Passes Away, Kent State University Basketball player and Coach

Kent State University Basketball player and Coach John Whorton has passed away unfortunately.

John’s death shocked everyone. Numerous tributes poured in since the sudden demise of John Whorton Social media users could not hide their shock at his death news.

It was with a heavy heart my friend & teammate John (Pope) Whorton left us all too early & will be forever missed. Please say a prayer for his grieving family…Angel, John Ramon and Kara.

Big John came in with me at Kent State as Freshman & was so instrumental in my success as a basketball player & how to navigate life in general. 🤗 He was one of the most philosophical, intellectual, measured, & fun loving teammate & friend I have ever had. He was always there for all of us through thick & thin. He accomplished so much in his short life. I cried laying in bed last night thinking of all the times we had. God bless you Pope. 🙏🏻

John Whorton was one of the first two people I met when I arrived at Kent State for Kupita, an experience to help a Black students gets acclimated to life on campus. He and Geoffrey Vaughn were my big brothers on campus protecting me from all the natural predators 😂. John was the nicest person I have literally ever met, a gentle giant of sorts. He has always had that guardian protector spirit which I think helped him become an amazing dad.
I was lucky enough to watch he and my friend Angela Whortonlove grow even attended the wedding on a sweltering 90 degree day in Ohio. The last few years have been tough for their family and watched from afar in amazement at how they stood strong in the face of adversity while still remaining the fun loving couple I’ve known since college. I’m at a lost for words hearing about the loss of John. I know how much he meant to his wife, children, family and friends. Just an unimaginable loss. I pray that everyone he touched remembers the moments he touched their heart, made them laugh or brightened their day and cherish them forever. He will always be with you in spirit and in love. 💜 Angel, I love you girl and I pray for your strength during this time.
