Kayleigh Smith Dies In Coryell County Car Accident

The Texas Department of Public Safety has confirmed the heartbreaking news that Nakoda Cheyenne Layton, 18, and Kayleigh Smith, 17, both residents of Coryell County, lost their lives in a tragic rollover crash in the early hours of Monday morning.

According to the Department of Public Safety, the fatal incident occurred on Interstate 14, near Central Texas College, around mile marker 278.

The vehicle, a gray 2006 Dodge Ram, driven by Layton, went off the road, flipped over, and tragically ejected both Layton and Kayleigh, who were not wearing seatbelts.

Both young lives were pronounced dead at the scene. Kayleigh R. Smith, born on April 4, 2006, in Temple, was an active member of Troy High School, participating in the Future Farmers of America (FFA), powerlifting, and serving as the football team’s trainer.

She had aspirations to pursue a nursing degree after completing her high school education in 2024. In response to this devastating loss, a fundraising event has been organized by Jennifer York and Leighan Southerland to assist in covering the costs of funeral arrangements for both Kayleigh and her mother, Leighan.

The GoFundMe page, which has raised $15,785, includes a heartfelt statement expressing the tragic circumstances surrounding the accident and the need for community support.

During this difficult time, our thoughts and condolences go out to the families, friends, and the entire Coryell County community affected by this profound loss.

May Nakoda Cheyenne Layton and Kayleigh Smith rest in peace, and may their memories be a source of comfort and strength during these trying times.
