Lois Lowry (born Lois Ann Hammersberg on March 20, 1937) is an American author who has written over thirty children’s novels and a memoir. She holds two Newbery Medals: one in 1990 for Number the Stars and another in 1994 for The Giver. She was a finalist for the biannual, worldwide Hans Christian Andersen Award, the highest honour given to producers of children’s books, in 2000 (and a US candidate again in 2004) for her work as a children’s writer. Gooney Bird Greene, her first book, received the Rhode Island Children’s Book Award in 2002. She was awarded the Margaret Edwards Award by the American Library Association in 2007 for her contribution to adolescent literature. She delivered the May Hill Arbuthnot Lecture in 2011 with the subject “UNLEAVING: The Staying Power of Gold.” She was also given an honorary doctorate.
