Lorde was born Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor to Sonja Yelich and civil engineer Vic O’Connor.

Her mother, Sonja, is a poet whose poetry collections include Clung and Get Some.

Together, they have four children, including Lorde. Their other three children are Jerry who was born in 1994, India “Indy” who was born in 1998, and their son Angelo who was born in 2001.

They raised their children in Auckland’s North Shore suburbs of Devonport and Bayswater.

Her father Vic, is of Irish descent. Her mother Sonja, was born to Croatian immigrants from the region of Dalmatia. However, she was born in Auckland, New Zealand.

After a 30-year relationship, they got engaged in June 2014. They later got married on May 6,  2017 in a private ceremony in Cheltenham Beach.
