After covering the news in Utah for almost 30 years, a local TV journalist has passed away.

ABC4 Utah, where Marcos Ortiz worked as the senior crime and justice reporter, said that he died unexpectedly early Saturday morning at his home. Age-wise, he was 68.

The TV station in his area reported that investigators have not determined what killed him.

ABC4’s general manager and vice president, Mark Danielson, issued a statement saying, “Words are difficult to find as we learned of the loss of our colleague and friend, Marcos Ortiz.” The writer, mentor, coach, and friend “was a legend in Utah. He led by example and taught us the value of curiosity. Everyone who knew him will mourn his loss and honor his memory forever.

Ortiz hailed all the way from Lovell, WY. He started his career in radio in California, then moved back to Wyoming to pursue print journalism and then television.

He has been a journalist in Utah since 1992 and began at ABC4 in 2004, where he ccontinued to work until his passing. According to his obituary, he largely focused on crime with an emphasis on cold cases and missing persons.
