Pastor Chris Hill Resigns and Leaves His Wife After Alleged Affair

After an alleged affair with a married member of his church, Pastor Chris Hill leaves his wife and resigns from the Potter’s House Church of Denver.

Members of the congregation learned of the allegations of infidelity via an angry text message from Hill’s wife. The pastor, protégé of megachurch preacher Bishop T. D. Jakes, launched his church in the spring of 2010.

As one of the largest churches in Colorado, the congregation has since grown to include over 7,000 members After a long month battling the exposure of the alleged love affair, Hill resigned and left his wife.

Hill’s church is an extension of The Potter’s House of Dallas where “The Bishop” serves as senior pastor. Jakes is a well-known and influential leader, filmmaker, talk show host and author with a huge following and has received numerous honors.

Like a beacon in the Denver community, Hill’s church has been called one of the most racially diverse and fastest-growing churches in the country.

His formal resignation comes after Jakes removed him from the 2017 International Pastors & Leadership Conference. According to previous promotions of the conference, the disgraced pastor was slated to teach a workshop on vision. A portion of the statement released by Hill’s church reads:

Joy, Hill’s wife of more than 20 years, claims she has proof that her husband is having an affair with their young goddaughter, Shine. The church and family have requested privacy during this time of transition.

Unfortunately, along with fame comes a public platform that negates the option of a private process. Hill is well known and loved throughout the Christian community.

Reportedly, this is not the first time Hill has cheated with a woman he pastored. Chris and Joy went through a similar situation eight years ago.

However, this time the couple has decided against the restoration of their tumultuous marriage. In the mass text message sent to congregants, Mrs. Hill said her husband admitted to the affair after learning that she had hired a private investigator who followed him for six weeks.

Initially willing to work on their marriage, Joy said she can no longer live like this since he refused to stop the affair.

Infidelity creates a painful and extremely difficult and complex situation, which involves all the emotions. For the Christian, it can stretch faith almost to the breaking point. However, it is important to remember that the adulterer or adulteress is not outside the reach of God’s grace.

Last month, the Colorado pastor announced he would step down for a month after the allegations became public. He has since submitted a letter of resignation, effective immediately.

After weeks of counseling, following the accusation of an extramarital affair with a married church employee, Hill resigns and leaves his wife of 20 years.

Potters House Denver New Pastor

Chris Hill Starts Preaching Again; TD Jakes’ Son-in-Law, Daughter Take Over Potter’s House of Denver

Just three months after resigning as senior pastor of The Potter’s House Church of Denver over an alleged adultery scandal and a week after mentor Bishop T. D. Jakes of Potter’s House of Dallas blessed his return to ministry, Pastor Chris Hill officially rejoined the preaching circuit Sunday in Durham, North Carolina.

Preaching under the theme “How to Recover All” at World Overcomers Christian Church, led by Pastor Andy Thompson, Hill is shown in a recording telling the congregation that the first step to do that (recover all) is “you have to learn how to ignore your haters.”

“You have to learn how to walk into the job where you know they hate you and say ‘good morning. How are you today? Praise the Lord anyhow,’” he said.

Hill resigned as The Potter’s House of Denver’s senior pastor in late April, after his wife of more than 20 years, Joy, alleged in a mass text message to church members that she was able to verify that her husband carried on an affair with their young goddaughter, Shirnae McFarlane, whose wedding Hill also officiated on September 26, 2014. Two Sundays ago, however, Bishop Jakes laid hands on him and declared restoration.

“God said that if we confess our sins, that He is faithful and just to cleanse us from … all unrighteousness. I just believe that this is what the grace of God is for,” Jakes said in a video clip from T.D. Jakes Ministries.

After getting blessed by T.D. Jakes, Hill said in a statement he shared on Instagram that he had been getting help with his struggles and Jakes noted that he was working on his relationship with his wife.

“Only my faith in God has sustained me through these challenging days. I’ve gone through a lot of souls searching, professional counseling as well as spiritual guidance from my covering.

After many months of intense work, I feel like I’m ready to consider a few of the doors God is opening for me to begin to minister, help others and provide for my family.

I solicit your prayers as I intend to be selective, accountable and gradual so I don’t overextend myself! I believe that God isn’t finished with me! Thank you to all who have expressed their interest in helping me on what I’m calling ‘The Road to Recovery!’ #grateful #restoretheroar,” he wrote.

Reflecting on his comeback Monday, Hill noted on Instagram: “I’m so thankful to God for my Friend @pastorandywocc and the great @worldovercomers church family for hosting me yesterday.

They were the first stop on my ‘Road to Recovery’ national/international tour and God really helped us. It was really Glorious. What a great Church! What a Great Pastor! What a great day. #grateful #restoretheroar#northcarolina”

The Potter’s House Church of Denver also announced on Sunday that founding pastor of the One Church LA, Touré Roberts, and his wife Sarah, who is Jakes’ daughter, had succeeded Hill as the new senior pastors of the 5,000-member congregation.

“This is a tremendous church and we are so honored to be given the privilege to serve the Denver community. My wife Sarah and I along with our children are excited for the challenge ahead.

We have already moved in and started to roll up our sleeves. We’ve got some exciting projects on the horizon and feel fortunate to lead such a talented team here at The Potter’s House,” Roberts said in a statement released by the church Sunday.

“The Potter’s House of Denver is a diverse family friendly-ministry called to serve the greater Denver community and beyond. We have a history here of compassion and involvement within our city and our state.

We are humbled to have the type of leaders among us who will work diligently to continue to not only uphold that legacy but expand the care, the outreach and the love that we as the church have always been known for here,” the church said. “We look forward to Pastors Touré & Sarah Roberts serving our church and our city.”

Former Potter’s House pastor Chris Hill confirms New Year’s Eve arrest, opens up about ‘horrible’ divorce

The former senior pastor of The Potter’s House Church of Denver Chris Hill, who resigned in 2017 over an alleged affair with a married parishioner, confirmed Tuesday that he was arrested on New Year’s Eve and jailed for just over a week in Atlanta in a harrowing experience he said left him feeling dehumanized.

“First time I’m in this situation and I’m like, ‘My God, you’ve got to get me out of this. You’ve got to get me out of this.’ But no. … they took me around the corner.

They stuck me with a needle for tuberculosis because I’m gonna be around people. And then they took me! Me!” Hill, a protégé of Bishop T.D. Jakes, said in a Facebook Live broadcast as he described how he was processed at the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office.

“They fitted me for an orange jumpsuit and forced me into a shower and checked me in ways that my God, no man should check another man. … I’m telling you, I felt totally, totally dehumanized. Totally, totally broke down. It wasn’t so much that it was physical as it was spiritual and totally, just totally dehumanizing,” the 50-year-old preacher said.

“Ladies and gentlemen, yes, this really happened,” Hill added. “A lot of people thought it was a hoax because it’s completely out of character, completely out of the norm. Usually, I don’t even put myself out there like that.”

Hill first highlighted his unexpected arrest at the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in a social media post on Saturday which was quickly deleted.

Authorities, he said, had alleged that he was a fugitive of justice but could not provide any further details as to why he was being arrested. The post was not deleted, however, before media personality Larry Reid of the “Larry Reid Live” show was able to get a screenshot and shared it with his audience.

“I am not a flight risk nor fugitive nor have I ever been. I have my 15-year-old son and my 74-year-old mother who is sick with Alzheimer’s who I am responsible for.

I was just on my way to do my missions work. I am asking for your support, prayers, and that you do anything in your power to contact both the city of Arlington Municipal Court and or the Clayton County sheriff’s office in Atlanta, Georgia, to either give me a charge or release me.

My friends, colleagues or anyone who cares about justice help me get out of jail. #freechrishill,” Hill wrote in the post which came five days after being in jail.

A representative from the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed with The Christian Post on Wednesday that Hill was booked on New Year’s Eve and released approximately one week later on Jan. 8. The representative could not, however, immediately reveal the circumstances behind the pastor’s arrest.

In his broadcast on Tuesday, Hill explained that he was on his way to a four-week, four-country mission trip in Africa when he was singled out by authorities.

“I [had] flown from Denver to Atlanta, I was changing planes and boarding 1D, had my ticket, I’m the second person on the plane, and boom, I turn the corner and there are these four brothers from customs and security that are standing there and they are standing there and asking the person in front of me his name,” Hill said.

He explained that they later stopped him and asked him for identifying information then proceeded to detain him.

“They tell me that there is a warrant for me in Texas. And they start walking me back,” Hill said.
