Portuguese MotoGP: Marc Marquez Crash, Marc Marquez Sauntioned After Portimao Incident

Following a collision with local favorite Miguel Oliveira on Sunday that caused both riders to fall out of the season-opening Portuguese Grand Prix, Honda’s Marc Marquez expressed regret for his error and agreed to a penalty.

In the first few circuits of the race, pole-sitter Marquez dropped to fourth after colliding with Pramac Racing’s Jorge Martin, who then collided head-on with second-placed RNF Racing rider Oliveira.

While Oliveira and Marquez were unlucky not to be eliminated by the Honda machine as they were taking the turn, Martin was able to regain his equilibrium and rejoin the race. Oliveira was clearly in agony.

I must first express my sincere apologies to Oli, his team, and his Portuguese Grand Prix supporters. I made a serious error,” Marquez admitted to MotoGP.

“Obviously, that was not my goal; in fact, I had no plans to pass Martin at that time. I had a significant front (tyre) lock; perhaps the hard front (tyre) choice was not yet available.

I let off the brakes after that large lock, which caused the bike to go inside. This allowed me to escape coming into contact with Martin but not with Oli.

Oliveira lost out on a potential podium finish on home soil, and the Portuguese crowd watched in dismay as Marquez apologized to the grandstand audience after he had returned to the paddock.
