Rev’d Anna Matthews Suicide: Why Did She Kill Herself? Death and Obituary

An inquest into the death of a Cambridge vicar who passed away earlier this month has been opened.

On March 8, 2023, the Reverend Anna Matthews, 44, passed away in her Cambridge home.

In Cambridge, Reverend Matthews served as the rector of St. Bene’t’s Church. Reverend Matthews passed away on March 9; the church provided an update describing her passing as a “great shock.”

Emergency services were summoned after Reverend Matthews had been “located by a friend” at her Cambridge residence, according to Coroner Simon Milburn, who testified at a hearing at Peterborough Town Hall on March 30.

The medical cause of death was determined to be hanging during a post mortem on March 16 at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

The current date for the inquest hearing regarding Reverend Matthews’ passing is July 31, 2023.

Reverend Matthews is thought to have committed suicide, the church reported in a later posting on March 12 online. The statement read: “We are awaiting the coroner’s report conclusions to learn more; this will come after an inquiry and inquest, which will take many weeks.
