Rick Newman Cause of Death: Founder Of Influential Catch A Rising Star Comedy Club
The creator of the Catch a Rising Star comedy club in New York City, Rick Newman, passed away on February 20 at his residence in Los Angeles. He was 81.
According to his wife Krysi Newman, the cause was pancreatic cancer. Like Crystal and Lewis, she noted with confusion and a hint of nostalgia for a bygone era that Mr. Newman passed away the day after Belzer, the club’s longtime emcee.
“This place we felt safe in, where the common objective was to just get laughs, was what really brought us all together back then. And for me, Catch in New York was the only location to do that, Crystal said in a phone interview. There was a club there where you could work out.
His two children from a prior marriage to Tammy Newman as well as his wife, the former Krysi Mulvihill, who he married in 2003, are his survivors.
Crystal reflected on his early days at Catch, when he would listen to a cassette tape recording of his performance while driving home to his wife and their infant, and how Mr. Newman’s passing, occurring so soon after Belzer’s, made him remember those times. At the time, Crystal was a teacher’s assistant. He was also at a fork in the path.
Crystal declared, “I’m either going to do this comedy I’ve always thought I could do, or I’m accepting the teaching job I was just offered.
He was appreciative of the timeliness and the way he took advantage of it.
If Rick and Belzer weren’t so warm and supportive, Crystal joked, “I might just be thankful I had tenure as a teacher and that I still had my health benefits.”
