Thane Chastain Obituary: Wichita, KS, KLC director of virtual learning

Thane Chastain of Wichita, Kansas, The Kansas Leadership Center (KLC)  staff has died at the age of 62 in his sleep.

The Kansas Leadership Center (KLC) mourns the devastating loss of a transformative staff member.

Thane Chastain, director of virtual learning and engagement and a strong force for leadership and innovation, died abruptly in his sleep at home in Wichita, Kansas over the weekend, one month before his tenth anniversary with KLC. He was 62 years old.

“Whether they’d met him or not, Thane’s work affected the lives of millions, in Kansas, across the country, and throughout the globe,” said Julia Fabris McBride, interim president and CEO and chief leadership development officer of the Kansas Leadership Center.

“He inspired everyone on the KLC team to aspire high with the quality of our media and technology. His inventiveness and expertise increased the reach of our program beyond anything we could have dreamed of without him.

“Thane led with love and lived the KLC leadership framework in all he did. Though taken from us without notice, he leaves an unmistakable impression on our company.

Thane’s particular blend of skill, enthusiasm and spirit is impossible to match. We will miss him greatly and cherish his memory.”When hired to run faith-based leadership initiatives in 2013, Thane rapidly exhibited a great aptitude for audio visual technologies.

To leverage his special abilities, a new position—director of creative technology—was created for him. Wielding that designation, and subsequently as director of virtual learning and engagement, Thane went on to play a pioneering role in the delivery of Kansas Leadership Center courses, massively increasing the reach and redefining the effect of the organization.

He supervised presentation and participation technology to create high quality interactive learning experiences for programs at KLC headquarters. During the COVID-19 epidemic, Thane swiftly produced virtual experiences on Zoom and streaming platforms that integrated interactive components of in-person experience with the unique reach of remote learning.

Recognizing the needs of a developing organization, he established and educated a technical team to support both in-person and virtual programs, at times scheduled practically round the clock and covering four continents.

In addition to these efforts, he operated KLC’s online bookstore as well as Your Leadership Edge.com, a self-paced, online training course based on the book of same name. Thane was also an adroit teacher, facilitator and long-time host of the alumni discussion series, On the Balcony.
