The Romanian-born Canadian poet Irving Layton did not start writing poems formally until he reached his 30s. He was a talented lyricist he considered himself a "romantic with a sense of irony." Known for his honest, outspoken, flamboyant and frank writing, Layton was nominated for the Nobel Prize for literature in 1982 and 1983.
