While preparing to participate in the College All-Star Game (a preseason American football game played from 1934 through 1976) versus the Green Bay Packers in the summer of 1962, Ernie Davis realized that his neck was swollen and he immediately rushed to the hospital.
At first, mumps or mononucleosis was suspected.
Ernie later met the criteria for acute monocytic leukemia and began treatment.
Davis signed a three-year, $80,000 contract with the Browns in late December 1961, the highest salary ever given to a rookie in the NFL.
Doctors informed him that he had leukemia while he was practicing for the College All-Stars that summer and that he had had cancer since April 1961.
Ernie Davis Death Cause: How Did He Die?
After a 13-month fight, Ernie Davis succumbed to acute monocytic leukemia, the most lethal form of blood cancer. On May 18, 1963, he died in the early morning in a Cleveland hospital.
Davis died at the age of 23 because the disease was incurable.
Ernie traveled to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore when he was facing death and was able to achieve a four-to five-month remission using chemical therapy.

Adjusting for inflation, Davis’ net worth at the time should have been more than $1 million.
