How did Sandy Denny die?
Her death was ruled to be the result of a traumatic mid-brain haemorrhage and blunt force trauma to her head.
While she was performing at The Troubadour folk club, a member of the Strawbs heard her, and in 1967, she was invited to join the band. She recorded one album with them in Denmark, which was released belatedly in 1973, credited to Sandy Denny and the Strawbs: All Our Own Work.

They were released on the albums Alex Campbell and His Friends and Sandy and Johnny with Johnny Silvo. These songs were collected on the 1970 album It’s Sandy Denny where the tracks from Sandy and Johnny had been re-recorded with more accomplished vocals and guitar playing.
A four-album box set entitled Who Knows Where the Time Goes? (1985) was produced by her widower Trevor Lucas and Joe Boyd and included a number of rare and previously unreleased tracks by Denny, either solo or with Fairport Convention (1968, 1969, 1974) and Fotheringay (1970). This was the first public indication that a large cache of unreleased material existed. A one-disc subset of these recordings was subsequently issued on CD by Island in 1987 entitled The Best Of Sandy Denny .
She was rushed by ambulance to Queen Mary’s Hospital in nearby Roehampton. On 19 April, she was transferred to Atkinson Morley Hospital in Wimbledon.
She attended Coombe Girls’ School in New Malden; after leaving school she began training as a nurse at the Royal Brompton Hospital.

Sandy Denny was one of the most captivating voices of her generation, from the glorious highs of Fairport Convention and Led Zeppelin all the way through to her tragic, premature death at the age of just 31.
Below, we join the story towards the end of Denny’s life. In 1976 Fairport Convention came home from tour in a parlous financial state, and Sandy Denny left the band for a second time. Her drinking escalated, and her black moods got deeper.
When Cole arrived at the flat, he found Denny unconscious at the foot of the stairs. She was rushed to hospital in a coma. When her condition didn’t improve, she was transferred to one that specialised in brain injuries. Days after arriving at his parents’ house in Melbourne, Lucas flew back to London.
The following March she took Georgia to visit her parents at their holiday cottage in Cornwall. One afternoon, coming downstairs, she stumbled and fell, hitting her head on a stone floor. Afterwards she told friends that her mother had refused to take her to hospital, not wanting to be seen with a drunken daughter.
That evening, a Thursday, a distraught Denny called a friend, Miranda Ward, who came to pick her up and drive her back to London. The two spent the weekend at Ward’s flat. On the Monday morning, Ward went to work.
Georgia Rose MacLean was born on July 12 ,1977, three months premature. She was kept in an incubator in hospital for two months, effectively to be detoxed. Denny was no more able to look after her baby when she at last took her home.
