Jaylen Waddle was born on November 25, 1998, in Houston, Texas. He attended Episcopal High School in Bellaire, Texas.

During his senior year, he played in the U.S. Army All-American Game. On National Signing Day of 2018, he chose to commit to the Alabama Crimson Tide over Texas, Texas A&M, Florida State, TCU, and Oregon.

In his freshman year, after recording 45 receptions for 848 yards and seven touchdowns, he was named the SEC Freshman of the Year. In his sophomore year, he was named first-team All-SEC as a return specialist and was named SEC Special Teams Player of the Year.

In his junior year, he decided to forgo his senior season to enter the 2021 NFL Draft where he was drafted by the Miami Dolphins.
