Berhalter was born in Englewood, New Jersey, and raised in Tenafly, New Jersey. He was Claudio Reyna’s high school teammate at Saint Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, New Jersey. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for his college soccer career. He spent the 1993 collegiate offseason with the Raleigh Flyers of the USISL. Berhalter joined Energie Cottbus of the German Bundesliga in 2002. He went on to make 111 league appearances for the club, captaining them to re-entry into the Bundesliga. Berhalter joined TSV 1860 Munich of the 2. Bundesliga in 2006 and was named captain of the team. He stayed for another two and a half years, appearing in 73 league games for Die Löwen. In April 2009, Berhalter returned to the United States after a 15-year career in Europe. His first club contract in his native nation was with Major League Soccer, which he signed. On April 3, 2009, his affiliation with the Los Angeles Galaxy was made public. Goals against decreased by half (from 61 to 30) in the Galaxy’s first season under Berhalter, who led the defense and helped Omar Gonzalez win Rookie of the Year honors.
