Hugh Freeze is the head coach. The above-mentioned names are the new hires recruited after the announcement of Freeze.

Auburn Football Head Coach

Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze was hired on November 29, 2022. He took over the job from interim coach Carnell Williams.

The Tigers had two back-to-back disappointing seasons, with 6-7 overall in 2021 and 5-7 in 2022. Hugh has been brought in to help change that.

The 53-year-old is from Oxford, Mississippi, and spent his academic years in Mississippi.

The Northwest Mississippi Community College alumni finished his Bachelor of Science in mathematics. He also did a minor in coaching and sports administration in 1992 from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Freeze’s Coaching Career

Hugh started as a defensive backs coach and offensive coordinator for Broarcrest Christian School in 1992. He was promoted to head coach (HC) in 1995.

He remained with the football team till 2004 and recorded 94 wins and 30 losses. He helped them become the State Champions in 2002 and 2004.

Freeze’s coaching expertise earned him the Region 8-AA Coach of the Year (five times) and the Associated Press Coach of the Year award (six times).

In 2005, Ole Miss Rebels knocked on his door, making him the Assistant Athletic Director of football. The next year, he took the role of tight ends coach and was the recruiting coordinator.

Freeze packed his bags and went to coach Lambuth Eagles in 2008. He guided them to their first playoff appearance since 2004.

The second year saw a great improvement as the team moved from 8-4 to 11-0 in the regular season. It was the institution’s best record ever. They were knocked in the second round of the NAIA playoff with a 12-1 record.

Another chapter started for Hugh in 2010 when he became the Offensive Coordinator for Arkansas State Red Wolves. Roberts was let go the following year, and Freeze was given the head coaching duty.

His 2011 record is 10-2, with a Sun Belt Conference title. It was Arkansas State’s first one since 2005.

A U-Turn To Ole Miss

The Rebels announced Freeze as their new HC on December 5, 2011. He was the 37th person to lead the university’s football team.

From 2012 to 2016, the team recorded 39-25, with the best of 10-3 in 2015. The on-field record was later rectified due to various recruiting and academic violations. The official record stands at 12-25.

Ole Miss participated in four bowl games and won three during this span. The 2012 BBVA Compass Bowl falls under the vacated win.

After the allegation and scandalous time with the Rebels, he was recruited by Liberty Flames in 2019. The first season result was seven wins, five losses, and the Cure Bowl win against Georgia Southern Eagles (23-16).

In his last season with the Flames, he left before the 2022 Boca Raton Bowl contest, which the team lost against Toldeo Rockets by 21-19.

A new chapter commences for the veteran coach with Auburn. He recorded his first win for the team as they thrashed UMass Minutemen by 59-14 on 3rd September.

Auburn Football Head Coach Salary

Hugh Freeze inked a six-year compact worth approximately $42.75 million. He will receive $6.5 million in 2023.
