Renowned Malaysian badminton player, Gan Teik Chai, passed away at the age of 40, leaving the sports community in mourning.

Gan, a former national men’s badminton doubles player and Australian Open champion, tragically succumbed to a heart attack while abroad. He is survived by his wife, Esther Ng, and two sons.

Gan, commonly referred to as “Ah Gan,” has received numerous sincere condolence messages from teammates and ex-partners. In expressing his sorrow, Datuk Lee Chong Wei thought back on their close friendship and their shared experiences on the court. A painful recollection now exists of Gan’s voicemail accepting a future match.

Tan Bin Shen, Teik Chai’s partner in the Australian Open triumph, recalled him as a happy man who uplifted emotions. Their professional careers were highlighted by victories like the Australian Open title and numerous event finals. When Bin Shen’s mother was battling cancer, Gan provided aid outside of the court.

Ng Hui Lin, a retired international player, spoke highly of Gan’s kindness and compassion, citing incidents in which he embraced total strangers as evidence of his compassionate character. The loss of Teik Chai’s friendliness and camaraderie is mourned by the badminton community.
