According to accounts, Mark Shields is in a wheelchair due to a wound that has left him half paralyzed.

The wounds sentenced him to spend the next 33 years of his life half-crippled in a wheelchair with slurred speech.

Shields, who resigned in 2020, gave scholarly observations about the administrations of six US presidents, as well as the Persian Gulf War, the Iran-Contra scandal, and 9/11. His term lasted 33 years.

Shields was known for his sense of humor as well as his extensive knowledge of American politics, according to Judy Woodruff, NewsHour host, and managing editor, in a tweet announcing his death.

Shields was married to Anne Hudson Shields, a lawyer, and former civil servant at the US Department of the Interior. Amy was their daughter, and they had two grandkids.
