Lester William Polsfuss (June 9, 1915 – August 12, 2009), better known as Les Paul, was an American jazz, country, and blues guitarist, composer, luthier, and inventor who was best recognised for his work on the Gibson Les Paul guitar. He was a pioneer in the development of the solid-body electric guitar, which was important in the development of the sound of rock & roll. He is recognised with many recording-industry firsts. The artist, while he was not the first to utilise the method, was one of the first to get public notice for his early experiments with overdubbing (also known as sound on sound), delay effects (such as tape delay and phasing effects), and multitrack recording, among other things. Many guitarists of the current day have been influenced by his creative playing style, which includes licks, trills, chording sequences, fretting methods, and timing. These characteristics set him apart from his contemporaries and have inspired many of them. In the 1950s, he recorded alongside his wife, Mary Ford, and the two of them sold millions of albums worldwide. Paul is one of just a handful of artists to have a permanent, stand-alone display in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which is just one of his numerous accolades. The Music Museum’s website prominently features him as a “architect” and a “key inductee,” with Sam Phillips and Alan Freed, among other notable figures. Les Paul is the only individual to have been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the National Inventors Hall of Fame at the same time.
