Smith, who was born in Columbus, Ohio, had a difficult childhood. His mother had a drug and alcohol addiction issue, which resulted in her incarceration and Smith’s placement in foster care. Despite these obstacles, he chose to concentrate on his studies and succeed in athletics. He began his basketball career at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio. Unfortunately, he was expelled from school after striking an opponent player during a game.
Smith subsequently moved on to Glenville High School, where he began playing American Football. During his high school years, he played under the direction of Coach Ted Ginn Sr., and he was a standout performer. Despite his achievements, just two colleges expressed interest in recruiting him to join their squad.
Smith eventually accepted an Ohio State University football scholarship and joined the squad in 2002. He joined the Ohio State Buckeyes as a running back and kick returner in 2003. After the team’s quarterback was injured, he was chosen to fill in for him, and it turned out to be his big break in college football. Not only did he begin to win games, but he also began to win accolades.
